| Giggs Hails Keeper's Steadying Influence Ryan Giggs has joined his manager in acclaiming the steadying influence of Edwin van der Sar in United's goal. Sir Alex Ferguson had earlier hailed the Dutch keeper's calming influence after five successive clean sheets. And Giggs has echoed Fergie's sentiments sighting van der Sar's experience as the key factor behind his impressive start to life at Old Trafford. "The main thing you want with a keeper is stability and Edwin has certainly given us that," Giggs told ManUtd.com. "You don't want to be chopping and changing [with goalkeepers] which we did quite a few times last season. "No matter which keeper plays you want stability and the same applies to the defence as a whole. "Edwin's got that experience and that big-match mentality and hopefully he'll continue to do well for us." |

| Fans: Ruud A Big-Money Bargain Ruud van Nistelrooy has been Sir Alex Ferguson's best big-money signing, according to our latest ManUtd.com poll. The Dutch striker came out ahead of Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Juan Sebastian Veron with almost half of the votes. Van Nistelrooy, who has scored 126 goals in just 172 games since his £19million move from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in 2001, registered 44.7% of the votes. |

Carlos: Goals Will Flow United’s assistant manager Carlos Queiroz believes that goalscoring problems that beset the Reds last season will not be repeated in the current campaign. Last season United netted 58 goals in 38 matches, their worst Premiership return to date, but Queiroz is confident that the side are equipped to put things right this time around. He cites the return to fitness and form of Ruud van Nistelrooy as the main cause for optimism. "Ruud is back and because he was literally not here last year he is like a new player for us," explained the Portuguese coach. "If you think that Ruud is back and his contribution is usually 30 goals in a season then we believe that our total number of goals will be improved." Van Nistelrooy has scored four goals in five games for the Reds so far this season and continued his good form in midweek for Holland, scoring three goals in two games. But Queiroz expects there to be other reasons for an increase in goals from the Reds between now and May, predominantly the number of scoring chances created in 2004/05. "There is no reason to be panicked by our lack of goals last season because despite all the problems that we faced last season Manchester United produced in terms of numbers - we had more shots on goal than any other team in the league. “Ruud van Nistelrooy is back having been injured for so much of last season. It is like having a new player for us." Carlos Queiroz "I think we had 538 attempts on target, something like that, but our problem was efficiency because we only took around 10 per cent of those chances. "If we raised that by four or five per cent, it would give us approximately an extra ten goals." Sir Alex Ferguson and his coaches sat down over the summer to discuss how the team can not only make up the points deficit to Chelsea last season but surpass their total. United have set specific targets that they are confident will bring the title back to Old Trafford. "If Ruud can score 30 goals this season that’s an extra 24 goals [he scored six in the Premiership last year]. So in total that would be an extra 30-40 goals this season. "With those goals we believe we could go up by 14-18 points. And we know from our experience and the way we play that by scoring more goals we concede less so the team would benefit all round. "We are very much confident where we should recover those points. It will not be easy but we know where we should do it.” The Reds have made their best start to the season under Sir Alex with five wins out of five and victory over City on Saturday would see them leapfrog the Blues and put pressure on Jose Mourinho’s men. |

Scholes: Reds Ready To Strike Back "In Ruud we've got a striker we believe is going to get us a goal in every game." - Paul Scholes Paul Scholes believes United are a team replete with goalscoring potential and expects the Reds to mount a far more meaningful title challenge this season. Comparing the start to this season with last year's dismal opening few games, Scholes says the team's major asset lies in its attacking options. "We're looking much better than we did last season," Scholes said adamantly on MUTV. "It's great to have Ruud back. He's got a full pre-season behind him and he's looking like he'll score every week, which so far he has been doing." Van Nistelrooy has scored four goals in five games this season. Alongside the burgeoning talents of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, United possess one of the most formidable front trio in world football. Amazingly, van Nistelrooy received criticism last term despite the reason for his lowly return of 16 goals - even then only one off the club's top scorer, Rooney - largely being down to two long spells on the sidelines. "He had a few injuries last season," Scholes says referring to the Dutchman's hernia and achilles problems. "It takes time to get over injuries like that. "His goalscoring record is second-to-none," he added. "We've got a striker we believe is going to get us a goal in every game." Crucially, in comparison with past seasons, van Nistelrooy is not United's soliltary provider up front. The 4-3-3 formation now employed by Ferguson offers many avenues of attack and goals from multiple sources. "We've got a lot of attacking players capable of scoring," Scholes attests. "Ruud, Rooney, Ronaldo, Giggs and Park are all capable of getting us goals." The 30-year-old midfielder can add himself to that list. Freed by the foundation of Roy Keane and Darren Fletcher, Scholes will seek to surpass his tally of 12 goals last season and further fuel United's firepower. |
