Rep kracht: 0 ![]() | Aamir Khan- Perfection personified! By Poonam Bisht Shahrukh may be the Baadshah of Bollywood, but I am the Ace ... declared Aamir Khan a few months ago. What a statement! It is the truth, the plain truth and nothing else but the truth (at least for the millions of fans of this ‘amazingly versatile actor’). Undoubtedly, Shahrukh Khan (with no ‘father’ or ‘godfather’ in the Hindi film industry) has shown to the world what ‘a superstar’ is really all about (Does anybody requires any proof? Well we don’t think so.) However, there is a difference between being a ‘a star’ and ‘an actor’, thankfully, our Mr Versatile, belongs to the latter category. Yes Aamir ... is ‘an actor’, rather ‘The Actor’. Such is the class and magnificence of Aamir’s work in all these years, that he is ‘awarded’ (oops the wrong terminology), many nomenclatures by his fans and colleagues. His colleagues call him Aamir- The Perfectionist. Here are a few reasons why. While most of the actors….nah ‘stars’ are busy shooting for three-four movies at the same time in different shifts (the consequences of which become quite visible from time to time), Aamir in his long career so far, has never worked on more than a single project at a time. Never. Such is the dedication of this wonderful artiste. Almost every director or producer, who has worked with Aamir so far, has acknowledged the fact that he is one actor, who is not bothered merely about his own role or dialogues, but takes an equal amount of interest in all aspects of the film. Right from the colour of the T-shirt he is going to wear in a scene of ‘Ghulam’ to the amount of blood that needs to be visible on his face and body in a fight scene, he wants to rectify everything. Not many people, who saw his brilliant movie ‘Sarfarosh’, may have noticed that in the first half of the film, when he is shown as a college going youngster (from a simple middle class family of early 90s), he is riding a Luna-moped, while his father and brother were going on a Kinetic Honda. Do I need to ask, who bothered to use the right kind of vehicles in the scene to make it look ‘so realistic’…no prizes for guessing- Aamir ‘perfectionist’ Khan. One wonders what happens when this perfectionism is merged with versatility - the answer to this question is also very simple - An Aamir Khan-like actor. Aamir is known for treading the path not many dare to take. Aamir was born on March 14, 1965 in a reputed film family. His father Tahir Hussain (yesteryears famous producer) and mother’s Zeenat Hussain could never have imagined that their extremely shy little boy would do wonders on the screen some day. Though Aamir was an average student but he was extremely good in sports during his school and college days. He was known to have a fetish for details since his school days. In the words of Aamir himself,” I never used to study hard for the exams. But I would remain extremely focused in the class. I would pay attention to every single word of the teacher, perhaps that was the reason I was able to manage pretty well in exams.” Aamir made his debut as a child artiste in his father’s movie ‘Yaadon Ki Baraat’. He always wanted to become an actor, but was too coy to bring up the subject to his parents when he grew up. He kept his ambition to himself for a long long while. But he was born to show Indian cinema ‘who is called a real actor’! He got his chance soon. His made a dream debut (as a hero) in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (QSQT), and became a rage among the girls. Due to commercial reasons, at the time of the release of his first movie his marriage to Reena was kept a secret. The word went out soon after the release of QSQT. However, it had no impact on his huge female following. Due to his boyish looks and innocent charm, he was even termed as ‘the chocolate boy’, a label which was earlier given to none other than Rishi Kapoor after ‘Bobby’. For several years, he continued to play the roles of a charming lover in films like Love, Love, Love, Tum Mere Ho etc. However, his power-packed performance in ‘Dil’ changed his path forever. He realised what he wanted. Heartbroken for not being given a well deserving ‘Filmfare Award’ that year (which he lost to an equally good Sunny Deol, who won for Ghayal), he vowed never to work in the hope of or to be lured by the ‘meaningless’ awards (except in cases like National Awards or Oscars). Aamir, has abstained from attending any award ceremony since then, stating that the real test or reward of an actor’s potential or hard work is ‘the appreciation of the audience’, and he cares for nothing more. He did not pick up the Best Actor trophies for brilliant films like Raja Hindustani, Sarfarosh or Lagaan. But, he has no regrets, as what he has achieved so far, none of his contemporary actors has managed to rival…the ‘unshaken trust of the audience’, who for all these years, has made sure that it would always see an Aamir Khan flick in the theatre rather than at home. His fans know that he will come up with ‘something different’ every time he hits the screen. Aamir earned ‘the trust’ as he has always given topmost priority to ‘the script’. “The script should appeal to me and then I should like the vision of the filmmaker before signing a film, “says Aamir regarding the criteria of saying ‘yes’ to a role. Wow, no wonder, he has refused to toe the line of ‘other stars’ (who are merely told on the phone by the biggies like the Chopras, “You are doing a film with us.”). Aamir, has said no to several of the projects of the Yashraj Films in the past including ‘Darr’. He can say no to the best of the film-makers if he doesn’t like the script, however, he doesn’t take much time to say ‘yes’ even to debutante directors, if he likes the script and of course their vision. Who would have dared to take the risk of investing crores of rupees for the project of a new director like Ashutosh Gowarikar (an unknown name before Lagaan). But, Aamir did, and he got ‘the reward’ as well, in the form of an Oscar nomination besides stupendous response back home. It is the versatility of the characters that Aamir has essayed in his career that has left a permanent imprint in the minds of the viewers. Audiences have still not gotten over ‘the cute lover of ‘Dil’, the ‘good for nothing school boy’ (Ya, you read it right), who ultimately wins the nerve-wrenching cycle race in ‘Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander’, an ‘emotional and helpless father of a small boy’ in ‘Akele Hum Akele Tum’, the ‘self respecting taxi driver’ of ‘Raja Hindustani’, the ‘legendary tapori’ of ‘Rangeela’, the ‘different, dutiful ACP Rathore’ of ‘Sarfarosh’, ‘the gutsy farmer Bhuvan’ of ‘Lagaan’ or the ‘ultra-trendy, modern youth sporting a goatee’ (imitated by thousands of young men later) in ‘Dil Chahta Hai’. How can anyone forget the ‘ice candy man’ of ‘1947 Earth’, who turns into a villain? Oops, the mention of the famous song ‘Aati Kya Khandala’ sung by none other than the actor himself, is a must here. However, what is worrying the fans of Aamir, now is, whether ‘one of the most talented actor’ who has immortalised all these roles is now turning repetitive? The fact that there aren’t too many actors around who dare to do ‘something different’ like Aamir has done so far, is making the scenario even worse. The fact that most of the flicks of Aamir Khan in the past few years like Sarfarosh, Lagaan, Mangal Pandey-The Rising and the latest one Rang De Basanti deal with the issue of ‘patriotism’ although in different contexts, has slowly started bothering critics as well as fans. While Sarfarosh and Lagaan turned out to be big hits, Mangal Pandey did not meet the same fate. Despite the fact that it was the first release of Aamir after a gap of four years following Lagaan, the movie merely did average business all over India. Even the excessive hype created around the film and strong promotion by Aamir himself could not raise its prospects. Although Aamir, is certainly not to be blamed here as he did a wonderful job in the movie (which suffered from various editing and technical faults.) Many of his fans were expecting something different from their trusted actor this time. He came up with Rang De Basanti, which too is about ‘the awakening of the nation to a common cause’. Had it been any other star, audience would have surely been disappointed at the repetition. But not with Aamir. The movie has done a remarkable business in India and is turning out to be one of the biggest Indian hits overseas. (Without taking away any credits from the director Rakeyesh Om Prakash Mehra and the other actors of the film) Aamir’s very presence brings the movie alive. He has done it once again. Shown to the world that acting is the simplest and the most natural thing to do, if one gives one’s all to the role. Just as Aamir does. His role as DJ (oops Diljeet), a college going (rather staying) Punjabi boy in Range De.. would certainly be added to the long list of his most memorable roles so far. Yes so far! Who can say that he is the same person who had witnessed so many upheavals in the past few years in his personal life (his split and subsequent divorce with first wife Reena, alleged illegitimate son Jaan’s controversy and his desperate attempts to protect his second marriage to Kiron Rao from the glares of ever-so hungry paparazzi). Now what is eagerly awaited by the fans of this hugely talented actor is his directorial debut. He still insists that his fans will have to wait for a little longer, as he knows it is a highly responsible job and wants to do full justice to it whenever he will don the cap. But we all know, a perfectionist like Aamir would certainly create a success story in this department as well. Hopefully he would continue to charm the audience for many more years to come. However, the big question in the minds of the fans is- out of the current generation stars, who would turn out to be his successor (in absolute perfection as an actor), for even if we already have a ‘Baadshah’, what we really need to win the game is ‘an actor’. But one thing is sure, an actor like him, can never be born/ made again. Bron: http://www.zeenews.com/spesial_art.a...281281&sid=ZNS |
