Biography

Madhuri Dixit (माधुरी दिक्षित) (born May 15, 1967) is an Indian Bollywood actress She is a native of Mumbai, India. Throughout the late 1980s and the 1990s, she dominated Hindi cinema, appearing in many hit films and proving to be one of the most successful superstars of the Indian film industry.

Her first major role was in Tezaab (198. She starred in the popular films Dil (1990), Beta (1992), Khalnayak (1993), and Anjaam (1994). Her best known role may be as Nisha in the super-hit Hum Aapke Hain Kaun! (1994). She also appeared in the successful Dil To Pagal Hai (1997). For several years, she was the most popular and powerful actress of Bollywood, known for her beauty and acting abilities, as well as her accomplished, sensuous dancing.

Dixit continues to act, although she is more selective about her films since marriage. Madhuri now splits her time between Mumbai and Denver, Colorado. She married an Indian American physician from Denver, Dr. Sriram Nene, in 1999. She has two children, a boy named Areen (born in 2003) and a baby boy born in March 2005.

In 2002, she starred in Devdas, with actor Shahrukh Khan and Miss World 1994 Aishwarya Rai. Madhuri Dixit was applauded for her superb acting in the film. The film attracted worldwide attention and was featured at the Cannes Film Festival.

Madhuri Dixit, the Ek do teen girl, set the screen ablaze and mesmerized the entire nation for a decade. A heady mix of soft, sensuous looks and a dazzling smile, this young starlet went on to become the femme fatale of Indian cinema. One of Bollywood's most popular divas, Madhuri Dixit was the reigning queen of Bollywood for well over a decade.

From a modest beginning in 1984, Dixit delivered many hits, ;largely with Anil Kapoor - Parinda, Jeevan Ek Sangharsh, Jamai Raja, Beta and Zindagi Ek Jua. Besides Anil Kapoor she as also performed with Vinod Khanna in Dayavan as well his son Akshaye Khanna in Mohabbat. Though not all her films have been box office hits, Dixit's screen performance and acting skills were noticed quite often. In a very short period her astonishing charisma mixed with versatility made her a superstar in Bollywood.

The Madhuri mania did not wear out despite many mediocre films. Dixit has also worked with a number of younger actors like Mukul Dev and Akshaye Khanna. She has been known to steal the thunder from her heroes and has outshone many of her co-stars in even the most male-oriented films.

Dil gave Dixit her first ever Filmfare award. Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, one of the biggest blockbusters ever produced, only reaffirmed her unrelenting hold over her audiences and the box office. Prakash Jha's Mrityudand won her critical acclaim and also the screen Videocon Best Actress Award. Nana Patekar's Prahaar saw a totally deglamourized Madhuri.

Yash Chopra's Dil to Pagal Hai gave her a completely new and contemporary look and fetched her the Filmfare Best Actress Award.

Her fan club includes the noted painter M F Hussain who made a film Gaja Gamini for Madhuri where she etched out four different roles. A great deal has been made of M F Hussain's obsession with her. Gaja Gamini, M F Hussain's fantasy on celluloid, is a celebration of feminine splendour and is dedicated to womankind. Not only that, he has even done a whole series of paintings of Madhuri.

Madhuri's latest film is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas, which was shown in a special out-of-competition screening at the Cannes Film Festival, establishing India's growing presence on the international movie scene. Devdas recorded 100 per cent collections at the box office in the first week of its opening and was received well by both critics and audiences.

Her popularity can be measured from the fact that the directors are still offering her lead roles in their films.
