Rep kracht: 11 ![]() | It is certainly not commonplace for a big-time Hindi film actor who has been in the hurly burly of show business for nearly four decades to still be in the process of evolving as a professional. But, then, whoever said that Amitabh Bachchan could ever be anything other than singular? Thirty-six years after he got his first break in Khwaja Ahmed Abbas’s Saat Hindustani, the Big B, incredibly, continues to grow bigger. The year 2005 has been entirely his – the only other Bollywood actor who can justifiably lay claims to a part of the year is son Abhishek Bachchan, with three box office successes under his belt (Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar and Dus). Abhishek has of course grown in stature as an actor and a star in the past two years, thanks a dream run after the commercial success in 2004 of the action flick Dhoom and the critical accolades that his sledgehammer performance in Mani Ratnam’s Yuva fetched him. But Bachchan senior obviously hasn’t been resting on his oars either. By the end of the current calendar year, his kitty of releases will swell to the levels that it had attained in 2004. Only, his success rate in 2005 has been phenomenally higher. In a year during which the reigning box office powerhouse, Shahrukh Khan, has had a solitary release, an offbeat Paheli at that, the 63-year-old Bachchan has manfully soldiered on, carrying the industry’s hopes and burden on his broad shoulders. Such are the uses of a timeless icon! Amitabh Bachchan has so far delivered four runaway hits this year – Black, Waqt – The Race against Time, Bunty Aur Babli and Sarkar. He has suffered a couple of duds as well – Virrudh and Dil Jo Bhi Kahey – but the year is far from over for him and he could still add to the tally of successes. Two more much-awaited Big B starrers are still in the pipeline for the year – Apoorva Lakhia’s Ek Ajnabee and Rajkumar Santoshi’s Family – Ties of Blood. Contrast that with the fate that befell Bachchan’s films in 2004. Barring Santoshi’s multi-star cast cop drama Khakee early in the year, all of them came unstuck at the box office. The list of duds included such big-ticket releases as Aetbaar, Dev, Lakshya, Deewaar – Let’s Bring Our Heroes Home, Kyun… Ho Gaya Na and Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo. Last year, the Big B appeared to be caught in a rut, repeating himself in film after film as a man in uniform to the detriment of his own career. This year, the theme has been very different – his four hits of 2005 have seen him essaying distinct roles and characters, investing each with an edge that the whole wide world knows he is capable of but was probably too overloaded with work to contemplate and focus on. Black gave him one of the most difficult roles of his long, eventful career and he pulled it off with panache. Yes, as an alcoholic, temperamental teacher of a difficult deaf-mute child, he was just a little over the top in parts but that clearly had more to do with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s filmmaking style than with Bachchan’s own approach to acting. The film that demonstrated the full range and power of his subtlety and raw intensity as an actor was Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar. Rarely is the Big B allowed to rein himself in quite to this extent and the result was absolutely stunning. With his face and eyes, he expressed much more than reams of dialogues could have. In the breezy Bunty Aur Babli, Bachchan pushed himself in a new direction by playing a fast-talking, gruff, grungy comic strip policeman who pursues the deviant lead characters with intent across the length and breadth of the country. Once again, he stamped his authority on the role beyond an iota of doubt. Isn’t there a lesson to be learnt in all this? The failure of Virrudh and Dil Jo Bhi Kahey proves that Amitabh Bachchan is better off reinventing himself with each film. In the first half of the year, he played a harried father to Akshay Kumar in Vipul Shah’s Waqt. The film clicked. Virrudh and Dil Jo Bhi Kahey did not get going because the two films seemed to offer more of the same. So, the evolution of Amitabh Bachchan must keep uncoiling without let – as a response as much to the inner urges of an accomplished actor as to the survival instincts of a towering megastar on whom an entire dream factory rides. For his own good and in the interests of the Mumbai film industry, relentless renewal and repeated reinvention has to be the name of the game for Bollywood’s greatest star ever. The bigger a phenomenon gets, the larger is the onus. Happily, on the evidence of the quality of the work he has done in 2005, the Big B’s best is probably yet to come. Interessant die Amitabh re ...kya djadu hain usmein .. |

Rep kracht: 11 ![]() | [color=red]Hindi films have a huge fan following, not only in India, but overseas as well. However, many people are not aware of the fact that even regional films have a huge market. Especially Bhojpuri films which have a huge following in UP and Bihar. We were quite surprised to hear that superstars Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will be making a guest appearance in a Bhojpuri film. The film also stars Nagma. Well is it surprising to know that Hema Malini will be part of a Bhojpuri film? This will be something new for her. Coming back to Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will also be seen in B.R. Chopra’s eagerly awaited Babul, scheduled for a May release. |

Rep kracht: 11 ![]() | Amitabh Bachchan has surpassed all heroes this year. His films Bunty Aur Babli, Black, Sarkar and Waqt: Race Against Time have done a business of Rs 1 billion already. Quite an achievement for a man who will turn 63 on October 11. This December, Amitabh will be seen in Ek Ajnabee, co-starring Arjun Rampal, Perizaad Zorbian, Kelly Dorjee and Vikram Chatwal. The film is directed by Apoorva Lakhia, who had earlier directed Abhishek Bachchan in Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost. Ek Ajnabee film is about a man (Amitabh) who loses interest in life, until he meets an eight-year-old girl. Bachchan's character has been hired by the girl's father to protect her from being kidnapped. The film was completed in 40 days, in a start-to-finish schedule in Bangkok, Thailand. |
